Indeed, the most nominated (Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare in Love) did
pick up the most awards for this 71st edition of the Academy Awards: 7 for
Shakespeare in Love including Best
Picture and Best Actress and 5 for Saving Private Ryan awarding Steven Spielberg
with Best
Director.
Outsider Roberto Benigni
not only won Best Foreign Language
Film for Life is Beautiful, but also
Best Actor and Best Original Dramatic Score. He had previously picked up numerous
awards in
Italy, Grand Jury Prize at Cannes 98,
Best Film and Best Actor at the European Film
Awards and
the César for
Best Foreign Film.
The Thin Red Line, which won the Golden Bear for Best Picture at Berlin
99, was completely
snubbed at the Oscars. The controversial Honor Award went to Elia Kazan.
