James Cameron's Titanic continued its record breaking voyage by picking
up 14 Academy Award nominations Tuesday, including for best picture, actress
and director. The only other film to get as many nominations was All About
Eve back in 1951. Titanic will now be trying to match or better Ben-Hur's
11 Academy Awards won in 1959 from 12 nominations.
Good Will Hunting, which screens Friday, and LA Confidential, which
premiered in Cannes, each received nine nominations, including best picture.
The other best picture nominees were As Good As It Gets, which received
seven nominations, and The Full Monty, which won the European Film Award
in Berlin in 1997, and received four nominations.
Good Will Hunting could become only the second film ever to win a Golden
Bear and the Academy Award for best picture. To date only Barry Levinson's
Rain Man has managed the prestigious double, and that was back in 1989.
Levinson's timely Wag the Dog, which also screens here in competition,
picked up two nominations, including for Dustin Hoffman's performance,
while Jackie Brown received a nomination for Robert Forster's performance
in a supporting role.
Films from Germany (Beyond Silence), the Netherlands (Character), Spain
(Secrets of the Heart), Russia (The Thief) and Brazil (Four Days in September)
received nominations for best foreign language film of the year. Both the
Brazilian and Spanish films screened in competition in Berlin last year.
The winners are to be announced in Los Angeles 23 March, after the
5,371 members of the Academy have voted on the nominations. CP
